Imagine you are writing the story of your life. Every day is a new page, a fresh start. Your life is a “choose your own adventure” book. What adventure will you choose today?
Taking responsibility and ownership of your life and your choices is paramount to happiness. You write your story. But it’s easy to lose focus and forget you can pick up a pen and decide what direction you’re headed.
How many times have I let someone else write my story? Oh, so many. I let other people’s opinions of me dictate my life and decide what choice I make next.
What about the times I stopped writing my story to write someone else’s? When I become so bothered by or jealous of someone else that the story I tell myself every day is all about them, not me.
All these short stories are not about me. At least I hope they are short. Maybe just a poem, or a haiku, so I can get back to writing my own story.
I feel I must admit to you now that lately I’ve been writing someone else’s story, and they have been writing mine. I find myself frustrated and angry at the things they are saying about me- that I don’t take work too seriously (well, that’s actually true), that I am unreliable, and that I don’t get things done. I’ve been letting this person’s story about me change my behavior. Then of course I analyze their behavior and start writing a story about them; they are emotional, fear-focused, and judgmental. This person is the one that’s unreliable, and here’s a handy list of all the times they let ME down!
I find myself thinking about these stories more than my own. Let me tell you, I’ve got a great story to write about my own life! It’s heartbreaking and heartwarming, it’s a triumph of the human spirit. It has loss, laughter, love, challenge, and, above all, great joy and happiness.
I’ve got a great story to write about my own life!
Today I’m writing this blog post to hold myself accountable. It’s time to get back to writing MY story.
What story are you writing today?
